Camp Arnold 2007, Eatonville, WA

I’m back!!
It’s been almost two weeks now that I haven’t had a chance to go outside to shoot.
So I just got back from a retreat in Camp Arnold, Eatonville, WA. a 3-day retreat and the first 2 days were amazing. The sky is clear, totally clear no clouds at all. Coldddd, brrrr, accompanied by a calming atmosphere.
On the first day, we reached there at about 5:30pm and it was already dark and I wouldnt want to try to take some shots (even though I did, it just turned out ugly
). So I took some photos of my friends (there were about 120 of them attending the Christian retreat). I set my iso to 400 that way I could just shot anytime. Then I decided that I should wake up early on the following day to explore the area.
I woke up at about 5:30am and started walking around. Oh wow it was very cold , I’m guessing maybe about 28 F to 30 F? I don’t know but it was freezing haha. Took some area photos, trees, mountain, lake and buildings. One thing I did realize on that morning is that everything is so beautifully untouched and made. It seems that it was just “built”. The frozen dews, the ice-layered lake, and the mist. They made the atmosphere so soft, beautiful, and peaceful. The lighting is perfect at around 6:30am. The sun was at the horizon and started to shine on the lake and the facing Mt. Rainier.
So everything went great in the retreat (amazing retreat, by the way, and great message by Reverend Irving) until I reached home and transferred all my photo into the computer and found out that all of my photos are in ISO 400
, you know i thought they wouldnt be worst but after looking into 1:1 ratio. noises are everywhere in every photos. hix hix.
I guess it’s ok right? hehe now I learned my lesson that I need to be prepared before a photo shooting
Below are some of the pictures that I took:

As I dug in through my photo folders, I found out these photos. I was in Ala Moana Center in Oahu with my wife during our honeymoon. We were just walking around and window shopping. I didnt get a chance to take photo of every brand shop.
Project: Buildings and Others

I have thought of another project of myself. Hope to gather all the unique buildings around Seattle area. Since I work around downtown, I think this can be a good project to work on the angles and lightings during the daytime.
Oh ya,I finally got to see the light rail tram in Seattle. The route is from Downtown to South Lake Union. But why it has to be orange in color?

On last Saturday I thought about something on highway. Then something popped and got me thinking that maybe I should take photos of the major highways around Seattle area. Now I’ve turned it into a project

Photo event by ISPA – Golden Park
November 4, 2007 by Rudy Setiawan · 1 Comment
ISPA – Indonesian Seattle Photographer Association has planned an event to go to the Golden Park down by the Ballard beach in Seattle. I finally managed to take a few photo and played around with “Av” (Aperture priority) as well as the “Cloudy” white balance setting. Shot at many different angles such as towards the cloudy skies, towards the inland and even tried to shoot two seagulls dating
I tried playing with compensation as well this time. I realized one thing that compensation sometimes is necessary to get the right tonal of the landscape. Many things that I’ve learned in this trip, especially with 3 professional photographers: Erward, Erwin and Supri.
Below is what I’ve captured:
Night Photo Around Seattle
October 23, 2007 by Rudy Setiawan · Leave a Comment
Wohoo another sunny day today and quite clear sky. My friend, Supri, and I went to several places around Seattle – from beacon hill to pike place and to Alki. We planned to do some night photo shooting and grab those beautiful stretch lights.
and guess what happened? My tripod broke! Oh my gosh, I was so let down by it. Luckily, there was a way not to waste the night. includes putting my camera on the railing of a bridge while the strap is hanging around my neck
i had to cheek the railing to peek into the viewfinder. At least I had fun. There were other photographers on this bridge and I was thinking that they might thought “what’s this guy doing?”. We met a guy who used a panaromic photo. It’s so cool 120 degrees viewed and multiple lenses and it uses not an ordinary film. We asked him how much it is and he said “It’s made from Russia and it costs about $200.00″ Not bad butI guess the film is expensive.
After that we went ahead to Pike Place market in downtown Seattle, to take the picture of the famous big sign “Public Market Center”, then went on ahead to the Elliot Bay and take the Seattle Alaskan Viaduct.
Our final stop was Alki and we took quite many pictures of Seattle from afar.
From this trip, I found out that tripod is very important, a slight wind can ruin your photo. Also I found out that during a night photo session, please use the AWB (Auto White Balance) and not any other settings. I used range of shutter speed from 1/8 to 30″. It was amazing and I learned alot from this trip. I hope to go another round with a good tripod this time

Playing with ‘Tv’ Exposure Mode
October 22, 2007 by Rudy Setiawan · Leave a Comment
Today was a clear day for the city of rain, Seattle.
I got a chance to test out the Tv mode in my camera and quite satisfied with the results actually.
I found out how the light stretch effect works using the Tv. Since that’s all about shutter speed, I had used in variances from 3 to 15 seconds slow. Below are some of the shots that were taken.

Downtown Seattle Buildings/Infrastructures
October 18, 2007 by Rudy Setiawan · Leave a Comment
About two days ago, I managed to shoot some more photos of the downtown Seattle buildings. It was a cloudy day (after rain) and I set my camera to the same settings Av + ISO100. The results turned out to look alright, I think I saw some improvement on the way I took the shot. But still yet I need to get used playing the aperture more often.

Photo at Alki Beach, Seattle
October 14, 2007 by Rudy Setiawan · Leave a Comment
On the way home back from church, I stopped by the Alki Beach and found a place where I can quietly take photos of the downtown Seattle. The sun was behind me. I set my camera to ‘Av’ with F3.5 – F5.0 and I took some shots and I was not much happy with the result of it. One: the noice is too much. So many of them. I don’t know what’s wrong with it but my guess will be either the sun shining down on the objects or the ‘Av’ mode that I had on. Two: hmm nothing I can think of hehe since I was blinded by the “noice” in the pictures. Maybe I should try to avoid the ‘Av’ mode and the sun shines next time. Below are some of the pictures that I think, at their best.
Dusk Photo Session
October 14, 2007 by Rudy Setiawan · Leave a Comment
I think it was on Tuesday, that I woke up quite early in the morning and as I walked out to my living room, I saw the sky was reddish orange. Wow it was amazingly beautiful, so I took out my tripod and camera and started taking pictures of the horizon. Then I tried to convert the RAW to JPEG format, I saw so much noise in the pictures. I was using ISO 100, Av mode and shooting timer. What could I do wrong, then in the program, I had to lessen the sharpness to 0 (it was 3) and it actually softened up the rough edges where the bright light (the sun) shine.
The below picture is actually the result of it. Anyone has some ideas about this noise?
Thanks!
